    May 6, 2024

I recently booked myself onto an activity holiday in Italy. The list of activities available included Via Ferrata. I had a vague idea of what was involved having seen a few posts on social media – I got the impression it was easier than climbing but more extreme than hiking. I signed up to find…

We climbed the Pyg Track which offers incredible views with some steep scrambles returning via the main Llanberis Path – an easier, well trodden…

Caithness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 This time l Caithness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 This time last week I was exploring the most northerly corner of our mainland. Caithness absolutely blew me away. The scenery is incredible. The people are friendly. It's quiet, wild and raw. 3 days wasn't nearly enough, but this is a taster of what I saw..

John O Groats & it's pretty harbour; Harrow Harbour (where I stumbled upon a family of huge seals); Dunnets Head (the actual most northerly point); Dunnets Beach (miles of white sand and hardly any people); The North Baths in Wick; Duncansby Stacks (my favourite!), the Whaligoe Steps and Lybster Harbour ⚓️ ⛰️ 🌊 🐚

I stayed at @ulbsterarmshotel in Halkirk. The perfect base for exploring Caithness and the NC500.

This is the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk 🏴󠁧 This is the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I've just returned from an incredible 3 night solo stay here and now want to spread the word about just how fabulous this place is!

✈️ I flew up from Gatwick to Inverness picking up a car rental at the airport. You definitely need a car as there is so much to explore. The Ulbster Arms is around a 2:20 hr drive from Inverness covering incredible coastal roads and Highland scenery en route.

🛌 I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights on a bed & breakfast package. Breakfast includes a cold buffet and hot menu, including full Scottish with haggis & black pudding 🤤

🎣 The hotel sits right next to the River Thurso which offers some of the best salmon fishing around. Fishing is a big deal in these parts - which means there are some delicious, local fish options on the hotels menu such as scallops & Scrabster crab.

📕 The hotel has a selection of cosy communal lounge areas, perfect for snuggling up with a book on colder days.

🛀 One of the highlights of my stay was the roll top bath tub in my room, with views across the Thurso. I've never been so clean!

🥾 The hotel sits in the heart of Caithness with easy access to the NC500. There is SO much to see and explore in this area 3 days simply wasn't enough. Highlights include Duncansby Stacks; Dunnets Beach; John o Groats; Dunnets Head Lighthouse; The North Baths in Wick... the list is endless!

Huge thanks to @ulbsterarmshotel for hosting me and making me feel so welcome whilst travelling on my own. Thank you also to @lemonpipltd for organising the trip.

Duncansby Stacks ⛰️ Straight out of Mordor, th Duncansby Stacks ⛰️ Straight out of Mordor, this place is unreal! If you're visiting John o Groats make sure you add this spot onto your itinerary. Duncansby Stacks are a short walk from Duncansby Lighthouse (about 2km outside John o Groats). The stacks are over 60m tall and a hotspot for birdlife. Thank you to a lovely lady called Holly who took this photo. Credit to Holly whoever you are 🙏🏼

Duncansby Stacks are about a 30 mins drive from @ulbsterarmshotel in Halkirk, the perfect pitstop for exploring Caithness and the NC500.

Caithness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I feel so l Caithness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I feel so lucky to be spending the bank holiday weekend in the most incredible part of the world...Caithness in the north of Scotland. This pretty harbour is Latheronwheel perched on the east coast surrounded by craggy cliffs and colourful gorse. Folk say there's fairies and all kinds of mystical goings on round here. It's easy to believe. It's bloomin' magical 🧚

I'm staying at the @ulbsterarmshotel in Halkirk, a few miles inland from Latheronwheel. Halkirk sits right on the River Thurso - one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Scotland 🎣 The perfect base for exploring Caithness and the NC500.

Good Times ❄️☀️🏔️ Finally, after 15 y Good Times ❄️☀️🏔️ Finally, after 15 years of being a Mum I got to take my minis to the snow. They were both awesome throughout the trip and now officially ready to rip 🙌🏼

Obviously skiing is not a cheap getaway, but we did this trip on a shoe string..

Flights (Gatwick to Lyon) £300 for all three of us.
Hire car (transfers tricky out of peak season) £250
Apartment £600 for 5 nights
Ski hire £120 (both kids plus helmets)
ESF lessons (2 x 1.5 private lesson for two kids) £170

Lift Passes: If you are skiing with beginners don't just buy a day pass, speak to the lift pass vendors to make sure you get the best deal to suit your party. We did the following:
Day 1: No pass for kids, they used free nursery lifts. Half day pass for me (available from 12:30pm) €55
Day 2: All of us bought Debutante passes at €23 each. This allows access to beginner areas and two chairlifts.
Day 3: As the resort was starting to prepare to close they were offering special spring rates. We only knew this as our ESF instructor told us - I did not see it promoted. We bought day passes for €33 (child); €38 (student) and €44 adult. These passes allowed access to all chairlifts but not gondola's.

The whole trip for 3 of us was still cheaper than the trip offered for one child by my teen's school, that's gotta be a win!?
