6 Must-See Cities in Italy

June 21, 2023

Italy is steeped in history, tradition and culture. Empires and dynasties have risen and fallen on these shores. Italy has played a crucial role in the course of world history shaping nations as we know them today.

It’s not surprising then, that Italy offers an enviable share of city breaks – each of them offering something slightly different. So, which cities shouldn’t you miss? I’ve picked six that stand out as unmissable, must-see destinations that should be included in the best Italy trips. How many have you visited?

Rome

The capital and historic centre of this culture rich nation. Rome is an unashamedly busy tourist city with world class locations including the Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. It’s a busy, bustling, beautiful city so plan the timing of your visit carefully – avoid peak summer months or consider getting up early to beat the crowds. Either way, you’ll never forget a visit to Rome.

Florence

A trip to Tuscany will acquaint you with the majesty of the Italian countryside. Nestled in the region’s hills, we find the city of Florence, which played a significant role in the Italian Renaissance. Besides the banks of the Arno, masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo honed their respective crafts. It’s a must-visit if you’re a fan of art and history.

Bologna

The city of Bologna is inseparable from its culinary reputation. Make sure you sample the ragu while you’re here. This stunning city also has a unique history with one of the oldest Universities in the country. Take time explore the pretty streets whilst sampling traditional menus in the cute restaurants.

Milan

The fashion capital of Italy….and arguably the world, Milan offers a juxtaposing blend of history and modernity. You can stroll through the shopping centres and find yourself at the cutting edge – or visit the museums and be immersed in the past. Take you pick!

Venice

As cities go, Venice is fairly incomparable. It sits on a network of waterways navigated by the city’s famous gondoliers. This unique city has a collection of more than a hundred distinct islands, most of them connected via a footbridge. You’ll need more than a day to see everything without rushing. Make sure that you include a trip to St. Mark’s Square and Basilica!

Naples

When most people think of Naples, they think of pizza. Locally mad Neopolitan pizza is delicious – with chefs sticking with the basic ingredients letting the quality speak for itself. Naples is also the perfect base to explore the famous city of Pompeii, which sits in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
