Is Spain the perfect family holiday destination?

September 20, 2018

Mainland Spain and it’s beautiful islands have drawn British families to their shores for generations now. Whether you’re a family who loves Benidorm or Ibiza, Majorca or Menorca or even a jet setting city family who prefer the cultural appeal of Madrid or Barcelona…Spain offers huge appeal as a family holiday destination. Here’s just a few reasons why Spain is forever on our family holiday must-see list..

Food

Spain’s warm climate and vast coastline provides an abundance of fresh ingredients and seafood. Indulging in some tapas will give your family the chance to try tasters of new flavours and dishes without committing to a full meal. Or perhaps paella made with freshly caught seafood is more up your street…gambas, churros, tortilla or patatas bravas Spanish cuisine has it all!

Culture

Spain invented the word fiesta and boy do they know how to party! From the bullrunning in Pamplona to tomato fights in Bunyol, Spain is renowned for its festivals. If something more sedate is your cup of tea perhaps the national culture for an afternoon siesta and lazy evening meals as a family take your fancy. Either way Spain can party as hard as it chills out…the perfect balance.

Language

Learning Spanish as a family can be a hugely rewarding and bonding experience. Prepare by investing in a good quality language guide that will engage the children. Try to say a few words each time you buy something at the supermarket or order food in a restaurant. Plus, if you have children at high school they may be pretty clued up on their linguistics already…perhaps they could teach you a thing or two!

Weather

Spain is one of the warmest countries in Europe meaning you can make the most of alfresco dining, days spent at the beach and warm evenings even into late September and early October. With a year round average temperature of 22 degrees Spain offers a warm escape even if the off season.

Beaches

Spain has an incredible 5000 miles of coastline meaning you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. Visit the Costa Blanca for your traditional sunbathing holiday, the Canaries if you’re looking for surf or water sports or the quieter Costa de la Luz to explore unspoilt beaches and quiet coastal villages. There really is something for everyone.

Short answer: YES! Spain was our first holiday abroad after our son was born and it was incredible. Not nearly as full of tourists as Italy (our next trip) and people could not have been warmer and friendlier.
