Scream Barn Farm at Spring Barn Farm, Lewes 

The fantastic Halloween event at Spring Barn Farm is back for Half Term. Scream Barn Farm offers a whole load a freaky fun from 21st – 29th October. We visited yesterday to check it out! Despite the terrible weather we had a brilliant time. We got spooked by the Witches in the Witchy Walkway, carved pumpkins in the Terrible Tent with the Wacky Wizard and explored the Maze Trail.

Spring Barn Farm is one our favourite places to visit come the school holidays. Having four children to entertain with ages ranges from 20 months to 12 years it can be really tricky to find venues that appeal to all….Spring Barn Farm is one of those rare places. With indoor soft play and outdoor water and sand site for the toddler and giant drop slide and go kart track for the older kids..there’s something to keep everyone happy (including a cafe that sells Pimms by the glass for the grown ups!!)

Spring Barn Farm has been a working farm since 1917 with current owners Mike and Louise Possegger taking the Farm over in 2002 gradually building the Farm Park into the dynamic attraction it’s become today.

The farm is located just outside of Lewes in the village of Kingston. As you arrive you feel like you are entering a real working farm… unlike some farm parks that have more of a theme park feel Spring Barn Farm has maintained it’s roots in agriculture. As you drive into the farm you’ll pass livestock and working farm machinery. Best of all the farm sits in a valley in the shadow of the South Downs allowing glorious views from the outdoor play areas.
The children are always eager to head straight to Cocky’s Indoor Playbarn each time we visit. Cocky’s is perfect for wet weather days and caters for all ages. Logan, our toddler absolutely loves the young tractor driver challenge where he can learn how to navigate ramps, refuel his tractor and park in a small garage. Our older children will spend an hour at a time on the epic Mega Drop Slide…or Death Slide as the kids call it…it’s pretty extreme…I was forced to try it! There’s also a Astra Wave slide, wooden pirate boat area, play house and babies only soft play area. Something for everyone!

The Playbarn also provides ample indoor seating where you can enjoy some of the delicious, locally sourced meals available at the farm. The farmhouse kitchen aims to reduce food miles wherever possible and provide homemade and wholesome adults and kids meals between 11:30am – 4pm every day.
The outdoor play areas offer just as much…if not more choice too! One of the more recent additions to the farm is the sand and water play area. This feature allows children to dig, scoop, pour and build with all sorts of taps, pipes, pulleys and tools. Logan makes a bee line for this activity every time we visit…but the older children really enjoy it too. I’d recommend that you pack wet weather gear for this activity…or a change of clothes for little ones because they will get soggy!

Our older boys (aged 10 and 12) enjoy the go kart track which has recently been upgraded from a mud track to Tarmac. The boys enjoy recreating their own Grand Prix and Top Gear action…a mini Clarkson and Hammond!
Daisy (age 7) enjoys all the play and climbing equipment. There’s a fantastic zip wire and a new tree top towers adventure area….a maze of towers and walkways looking towards the Downs. The outdoor play area is all located in one place..so I feel happy to let my older children play on their chosen activity whilst I stay in the middle with my youngest at the sand and water play.

Of course no trip to the farm is complete without meeting some of the animals. Spring Barn Farm always have multiple opportunities to meet and pet their animals throughout the day. What’s even better is, unlike some other farms I’ve been to, the animal area is always fairly quiet. Our children have always had plenty of time to stroke and chat to the animals at their own pace rather than feel pressured to allow another child their turn. I’m pretty sure the animals enjoy a smaller audience too! On this visit we were able to stroke a chicken, rabbit, Guinea pig and tortoise. There were also a number of new lambs that the children could meet. There’s also a great penned area outside where you can feed some of the larger animal residents… We love the fluffy pig and the cheeky ponies!

Tips for a successful visit: 

• Make sure you remember socks for the indoor soft play…they’re easily forgotten in the Summer but you won’t be allowed on the apparatus without them!
• Bring wet gear or a change of clothes  for water play area.
• Take buckets and spades for sand areas.
• Take a photo of the activity timetable at the entrance with your phone as you arrive so you can remind yourself of what’s happening and when.
• Book advance online for the best ticket deals.
